Solar Eclipse Safety & Resources

We are excited that our students will get to experience the unique event of the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8th. As you know by now, we are extremely fortunate that Evansville is in the path of totality, making this a very historic event. All schools will be receiving solar eclipse glasses for students and staff members the week of April 1st. Since the EVSC is not in session on April 8th, it will be important to prepare all students on how to view the eclipse in a safe manner.

We are asking schools to do the following to prepare students for the eclipse:
  • Please review the Total Solar Eclipse Safety Sheet and send a copy home with students when they receive their eclipse glasses.
  • Consider showing students this National Geographic video on solar eclipses to help them understand what to expect.
  • Take time to highlight that viewing the Sun without solar eclipse glasses is dangerous and that glasses can only be removed during the brief moment of totality (when the Moon is completely covering the Sun).
  • Discuss the timing of the eclipse. While a clear, sunny day will enhance the experience, the eclipse will still have a dramatic effect on a cloudy day.
    • Monday, April 8th
    • Totality (when the Moon completely covers the Sun) starts at approximately 2:02 p.m. in Evansville and will last around 3 minutes.
This event will undoubtedly spark student curiosity. Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security has provided several resources to frequently asked questions.  Please see the list below for additional resources:
